Avatar is an excellent sci-fi thriller deserving of the same excited following the Star Wars films have had. Like those earlier films, it has depth as well as surface action and visual extravagance: a modern-day cautionary tale involving exploitation by an advanced "civilization" and a historical level in which Native Americans win for a change. Everyone should see it, sci-fi fan or not.

And if Avatar pleases your films palate, by all means don't miss the other great sci-fi success of 2009, District 9, on DVD or in reduced price houses. The hand-held camera gives it the immediacy of a news broadcast in action, and the story line is accompanied, too, by the depth of a moraility play.
